For 70 years, Les Tourelles in Normandy has been a player in social and solidarity tourism. Acquired in 1952 by the Confederation of Workers’ Families of Caen by Mr and Mrs Lefebvre for a symbolic €1 on the condition of welcoming and allowing families from popular backgrounds to enjoy seaside holidays.
Asnelles is a coastal municipality in Calvados in Normandy, 15km from Bayeux and about 30km from Caen. It was during the Second Empire that the village of Asnelles acquired its nobility thanks to Mayor Théodore Labbey, who drained the marshes, developed a dike and thus created a seaside resort popular with wealthy Parisians who built beautiful seaside homes. At the end of the 19th century, Asnelles was nicknamed « the Little Trouville ».
Normandy is well known for its varied cuisine. Dairy products, white cream, cheeses (camembert, livarot, pont-l’évêque…), but also for all its apple-based products (calvados, cider, apple juice), tripes à la mode de Caen, Isigny caramels, teurgoule, vire andouille, seafood or the famous Asnelles sablés, a biscuit factory created in 1894 that will welcome you in its shop or tearoom, showing you a traditional know-how.
From the village, several pedestrian or bike hikes are available: visit of the oyster parks, Ver sur mer Memorial inaugurated in 2021 by the customs path between beach and marsh, a bike path overlooking the cliffs designed to the battery of Longues sur mer. Our partner, the Asnelles leisure club offers sand yachting (dune buggy) initiation sessions supervised by qualified instructors. Longe côte (aquatic walk) consists of walking in an aquatic environment with water at a height between the navel and the armpits. The activity is practiced in groups throughout the year, on sandy beaches with a low slope, presenting no major obstacle or particular risk.
Normandy is known for being a spectator of World War II. (is often considered a major turning point of WW2) It is still very ingrained in the landscape. As you walk along our coasts or in the plains, you can see many relics. The batteries of Longues-sur-mer will astonish you, the artificial port of Arromanches will surprise you.
But you can also be surprised by the medieval era, which is well rooted in our cities. Go for a walk in the old Bayeux or (the Vaugueux) in the historical area of Caen and you will see and understand that it is still very present.
Normandy is also castles! The castle of Caen as well as the castle of Falaise still watch over their cities! Cathedrals and churches are also integral parts of the historical landscape.
